What's going on here with the Syndication, RSS/XML stuff? |
These syndication links will take you to an RSS feed. RSS (Really Simple Syndication)
is a standard that helps deliver web content through a standardized format.
When you click on them while visiting this site, you'll see a large XML document.
Not too pretty to look at, either. But what makes RSS really cool is using an RSS
Aggregator or Feed Reader program. Just like you use an e-mail program to collect
your e-mail from different sources, an RSS Reader will keep track of your favorite
RSS feeds and let you know when they are updated.
This site currently supports two RSS feeds: one for my blog, and the other for my
personal pictures. Any time a new picture is uploaded, or a new blog entry made,
the RSS feeds are changed, too. It's the job of the RSS reader (a program running
on your computer) to routinely check all of the feeds you've told it to monitor.
Usually within a few hours (or sooner, depending on how you've set it up) the RSS
client on your machine will have downloaded the new feed.
As you can see, if you frequently a few sites that support RSS, it's a great way
for the information to come to you. It also helps do away with pesky e-mail lists.
To get started, download an RSS application -- I recommend RSS Reader or
RSS Bandit, or use any other application that supports RSS feeds.
Setting up an RSS feed is easy. Any time you see an orange "XML" or "RSS" icon (like
this:
), follow the link in your web browser.
Copy the link from the address bar of your web browser and add this link to your
reader. The rest is done automatically.
